Rubbish and Recycling

The Council runs a weekly kerbside rubbish collection and an alternating fortnightly greenwaste and recycling collection service in the District.

Waste Collection Day

Search your rubbish collection day on the Whakatāne District Council website.

Please note, there are no collections on Christmas Day, New Years and Good Friday. All other days, including public holidays, there are collections as usual.

Place your rubbish, recycling and greenwaste bins on the kerbside by 7:30 am on your collection day.

Remember, you place your rubbish out for collection every week. Your yellow lid recycling bin and glass crate are placed out together every second week, alternating with your greenwaste collection (if you receive it).

Collection generally occurs at about the same time each week, although this can be influenced by the weather, roadworks, breakdowns or heavy collection days. Bins will be serviced between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. If your bin has not been serviced by 5:30 pm on your given day of collection, please contact Customer Services on 07 306 0500.

Kerbside rubbish is collected weekly, while greenwaste and recycling collections happen fortnightly on alternate weeks. The fees for this service are paid via rates, and Council supplies each urban household with a rubbish bin (80 litre), a yellow lid recycling bin (240 litre), a glass crate, and a greenwaste bin (240 litre). Rural and commercial properties just receive the rubbish bin, recycling bin, and glass crate.

Recycling

All residents in the district with a rubbish collection service also have kerbside recycling. If you live in an urban area, you’ll have a crate for your glass bottles and jars and a yellow lid bin for all your other recyclables (paper, cardboard, tins, cans, grade 1 and 2 plastics). Please remove all lids from your bottles and jars. You can have up to three glass crates per service; each additional or replacement crate has a one-off charge of $20. These can be purchased from the Refuse Transfer Station, 60 Te Tahi Street, Whakatāne and at the Murupara Service Centre, Pine Drive, Murupara.

Remember, you put your glass crate and yellow lid bin out at the same time, every fortnight, and on alternate weeks to your greenwaste (if you have it).

If you’ve had a party or have too many recyclables to fit in your crate and bin, you can drop them off free of charge at the Transfer Stations at Whakatāne and Murupara. Recyclables can also be taken to the community-run transfer stations at Minginui and Ruatāhuna.

Transfer Stations

There are two transfer stations in the Whakatāne District:

Whakatāne Transfer Station – 60 Te Tahi Street, – Opening hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm.

Murupara Transfer Station – Harakeke Road, – Opening hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10am to 3pm. Tuesday and Thursday 2:30pm to 5pm. Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm
