Cemeteries & Crematorium
Whanganui District Council operates and maintains five public cemeteries within the Whanganui District.
Aramoho Cemetery is the current primary site for burials and cremations.
Brunswick, Matarawa and Pākaraka cemeteries are small, rural cemeteries servicing these local communities.
Heads Road Cemetery is an historic, early European settlement cemetery dating from the early 1840s, and is closed to new burials.
As one of the four earliest public cemeteries in New Zealand, Heads Road Cemetery is of outstanding historical significance and has a heritage listing with Heritage New Zealand.
Linked to both people and events of significance in Whanganui’s and New Zealand’s history, Heads Road Cemetery also retains historical integrity as an example of a Victorian/ Edwardian cemetery. The cemetery has undergone few changes over the years, and contains examples of monumental masonry styles from the 1840s through to the 1920s.
