타라나키(Taranaki)의 집값 상승 배경으로 원격 근무 환경이 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다.
주택 가격이 하락하는 대부분의 지역과 달리 이번 주 코어로직(CoreLogic)에서 발표 한 수치에 따르면 타라나키 지역의 부동산 가격은 10% 이상 상승했다.

마이크 파월(Mike Powell) 하코트(Harcourts)의 부동산 중개인이 RNZ 뉴스와의 인터뷰에 따르면 이 지역이 전국의 부동산 추세에 어긋난다고 밝혔다.
“특히 뉴플리머스(New Plymouth)를 제외한 타라나키 지방은 전반적으로 상황을 잘 버텨내고 있는 중이다. 실제로 지난 분기 뉴질랜드에서 작년 같은 분기 대비 가격이 상승한(1.76%) 유일한 지역이었다.”

파월씨는 원격 근무 증가가 수요의 원인이라고 꼽았다.
“코로나는 사람들의 삶에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며 사람들은 더이상 사무실에서 일할 필요가 없다는 것을 깨닫게 됐다. 그 중 일부는 일때문에 대도시 한가운데서 살 필요가 없다고 생각한다. 자신만의 라이프 스타일, 학교 교육, 따뜻한 지역 및 기후를 고려해 이주하고 있다. 뉴플리머스는 그런 관점에서 아주 좋은 선택지다.”

뉴플리머스에 본사를 둔 매니폴드 코워킹 스페이스(Manifold co-working space) 소유주 그래험 넬슨(Graham Nelson)씨는 신규 등록때문에 유례없이 바쁜 날들이었다고 말했다.
“코로나 및 거리 두기로 인해 원격 근무가 정말 빠르게 보편화됐다. 고용주들은 사무실에서 일하지 않는 것이 훨씬 편하다. 그러다 보니 사람들은 점점 ‘내가 이동 시간에 시간을 낭비하면서까지 뭐하러 오클랜드에 살고 있는거지? 타라나키 같은 라이프스타일 지역에서도 이 모든 것들을 할 수 있는데’와 같은 생각을 한다고 본다.”

엔지니어 벤 딕슨(Ben Dixon)씨는 웰링턴에서 10년 넘게 살다가 타라나키로 돌아왔다.
“저에게 중요했던 건 주택 가격이 아니라 근접성이었다. 우리는 웰링턴에서 시내에서 45분-한 시간 거리에 있는 집을 보고 있었는데, 타라나키에서는 시내와 도보로 10분 거리에 있는 집에 살고 있다”고 RNZ News에 말했다.
“아로 밸리(Aro Valley)에 있는 동일한 주택이 웰링턴에서는 백만 달러가 넘을 것이다. 이곳에서는 그렇게 큰 돈을 들이지 않았기 때문에 그런 점에서 만족한다.”

지난달 타라나키의 평균 주택 가격은 755,000달러로 한 달 전보다 3만 달러 상승했고 1년 전보다 5만 달러 상승했다.
