Air New Zealand has bought its first electric aircraft that runs on batteries. The purchase was announced by CEO Greg Foran on Wednesday. The plane, an Alia CTOL, was bought from Beta Technologies, a company based in the U.S.
Foran stated that while sustainable aviation fuels are important for reducing carbon emissions in both long and short haul flights, next generation aircraft like the Alia CTOL can help in reducing carbon emissions in regional operations.
Initially, the plane will only be used for cargo, in partnership with New Zealand Post.
The decision to buy the plane was made after consulting with 30 organizations for 18 months. Air New Zealand chose four partners to help achieve its sustainability goals.
Foran added that the new aircraft will not replace the existing fleet but will help the airline learn more about the changes needed in the aviation system to use larger, next generation aircraft from 2030.
The plane is expected to be operational in 2026, after it has been tested and certified by the Civil Aviation Authority.
