뉴질랜드인들은 AUKUS 참여 가능성에 대한 협상이 아오테아로아의 핵 없는 지위를 훼손하지 않을 것이라고 확신하고 있습니다.

호주, 미국, 영국 간의 이번 합의는 중국의 지역적 영향력 확대 추진에 대한 직접적인 대응으로 널리 알려져 있습니다.세 사람은 안보 협정을 인도-태평양을 비롯한 전 세계의 “안정, 평화, 번영에 기여하는 해저 능력”을 제공하는 것으로 주장합니다.

그러나 중국의 눈에는 3국이 “잘못되고 위험한 길로 더 나아가고” “국제 사회의 우려를 완전히 무시했다”고 볼 수 있습니다.

AUKUS의 첫 번째 핵심 요소는 호주가 2030년까지 원자력 잠수함을 배치할 수 있는 기술과 역량을 확보하기 위한 수십억 달러 규모의 계약입니다.

이러한 “민감성”은 뉴질랜드의 핵 없는 법률이었으며, 앤드류 리틀 국방부 장관은 뉴질랜드가 관여할 수 있는 AUKUS 지역과 상충되지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.

그는 “뉴질랜드는 이 두 가지 측면에 우리가 참여할 수 있을지, 참여할 수 있을지 논의할 기회를 제공받았다. 나는 우리가 그것을 탐구할 의향이 있다고 밝혔고, 여기까지가 전부다”라고 그는 말했다.

안보 협정은 더 넓은 태평양에서도 파장을 일으키고 있으며, 다른 국가들은 이 협정이 뉴질랜드와 호주가 모두 서명한 라로통가 반핵 확산 조약에 위배된다고 우려하고 있습니다.
