Awanui is a contender for the ‘Most Beautiful Tiny Town’ in the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards this year. The recent upgrades and the town’s vibrant spirit could give it an edge in the competition. Two years ago, the nearby Kaitāia won the title for ‘Most Beautiful Small Town’, but this year’s focus is on smaller communities.
Awanui has undergone a transformation, with vibrant murals, enhanced gardens, and a spotlight on its history. One standout mural named ‘Flox’ was crafted by local artist Hayley King, with support from Pierre and Sheree Wagner.
Shelly Matthews, a long-time local, praises the town’s renewal. She mentions the overhaul of once-neglected areas and buildings, including a pub and a cafe, making Awanui an attractive stop for visitors.
Another local, Chris Srhoj from Awanui Tyreman, believes the town’s nomination is well-deserved. Awanui acts as the entry point to Cape Reinga, increasing its footfall.
Martin and Glenys Hawkins, who recently took over the Bakeman Cafe, see immense potential in the town. Martin plans to rename the cafe ‘Big River’, a nod to Awanui’s heritage.
This year’s ‘Most Beautiful Tiny Town’ award aims to recognise small towns with populations under 1,000 that have made significant environmental contributions.
Awanui’s nomination notes its community-driven rejuvenation, highlighting public art, recreational spaces, and sustainability efforts.
The winners will be announced on November 9th at Parliament House. The top award includes a mural for the winning town by a local artist, worth up to $10,000.
