As the long weekend approaches, drivers are being reminded not to risk their safety or that of others on the road. Police across New Zealand will continue to monitor known causes of accidents, including seatbelt use, impairment from alcohol, drugs or fatigue, distractions like cell phones or food, and speeding.
Steve Greally, the director of road policing, says they don’t want families and communities to suffer the tragic outcomes of poor decisions on the road. He adds that police are committed to keeping roads safe every day of the year, not just on public holidays. He insists that they will not tolerate road deaths and will continue to work to prevent them, asking drivers to do the same.
Greally warns that drivers caught endangering their own safety or the safety of others can expect to face penalties. He says that drivers should anticipate police patrols on the roads at any time and place, to ensure everyone arrives at their destinations safely.
To assist drivers in planning their trips, the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi’s Journey Planner provides travel time information and updates on any delays, roadworks or closures.
