The warm sun shines through the leaves, casting golden spots on your face as a cool stream flows gently around you. You feel completely at peace, surrounded by the calmness of nature.
This is the experience at Redwood Valley Farm in Paengaroa, a favorite retreat for the Robinson family. Ten years ago, they were able to take over the farm, a dream come true for Marty Robinson, who now runs the farm with his wife Chrissi.
The farm was originally owned by Geoff and Jill Brann, who acquired it in 1964 through a government lottery. They started planting trees in the 1960s, and now the farm is a beautiful example of what can be achieved with 50 years of careful planting and erosion control.
The farm spans about 75 hectares. One-third of it is native bush, one-third is park land, and one-third is open land, mainly for dry stock cows. A spring-fed stream runs through the farm, providing a refreshing swimming spot during the summer.
Last year, a heavy storm caused damage to the stream and tracks on the farm. Despite this setback, Marty says they are doing well, thanks to help from the community and their own clean-up efforts.
Redwood Valley Farm offers simple cabins and campsites for visitors to enjoy. There’s no internet or cell reception, making it a great place for families to reconnect. Activities include exploring the farm, spotting native birds, and interacting with the farm’s highland cows, chickens, and goat named Bella.
