Many people in Christchurch who are struggling financially will have a happier Christmas thanks to the generosity of strangers. The local Methodist Mission has been busy with volunteers collecting and distributing donated Christmas hampers to those in need.
The volunteers, dressed as reindeer and elves, unloaded cars filled with boxes of Christmas lunch, presents, and festive treats. Each box was specially prepared for the family that would receive it. This year, 165 hampers were given out, benefiting more than 400 children.
Andrew, a single father, expressed his gratitude for the help he has received over the past few years. He said the donations make a huge difference and relieve some of the financial stress during the holiday season.
A single mother of four, who recently welcomed her first grandchild while transitioning off welfare, also received a hamper. She said it’s been tough to make ends meet, especially since she can only work limited hours due to her youngest child still being in school. She was overjoyed to receive the hamper, saying it will make a big difference for her family’s Christmas.
Zack, another recipient, said his family has been struggling with various issues, including building a house. The hamper from the Methodist Mission will help them celebrate Christmas.
The hampers were donated by individuals and groups who wanted to share the holiday spirit. Emmett Williamson’s family, for example, has made it a tradition to donate a hamper instead of giving each other presents.
Nicki Lover, a long-time donor, organized her office to contribute items for the hampers. They also included vouchers for groceries and movies to make the holiday season and January more enjoyable for the recipient families.
Glenda Marshall, the City Mission’s Support a Family coordinator, said families usually receive a hamper if they’ve had a tough year or are struggling financially. She noted that there has been no shortage of donors in the 15 years the program has been running, and this year has been no exception. She added that everyone involved, from the donors to the recipients, enjoys the experience.
