This Saturday night, Baypark Speedway will host the Bay Summer Slam event, featuring the return of current and former national champions. Five different racing categories will be on show, with a highlight being the final race of the Midget Car division for the summer season. The star of this race will be newly crowned national champion, Brad Mosen.
Mosen started the season with a win at Baypark, but had to miss some events due to a three-week suspension. However, he has since claimed his second New Zealand title in Christchurch. He will be joined by other national title contenders Brock Maskovich and Mitch Fabish, among a field of 20 racers.
In a blast from the past, Ben Finemore will return to Baypark nearly 20 years after one of his most memorable victories. At just 15 years old, Finemore won the 2005 New Zealand Sprint Car Championship at Baypark, even before he had a road license. He has been living in Queensland, Australia, but will be back to race a Six Shooter car owned by Tom Ward.
The Harry Fredrickson Memorial Gold Cup for Stock Cars has attracted a large field of 35 drivers from various parts of New Zealand. Among them is recent BOP title winner, Karl Garnett, who is considered a top contender.
Sprint Car racers Dean Cooper and Jamie Larsen will also return to Baypark, sporting new numbers after finishing second and third respectively at the recent NZ Championship.
Lastly, the Super Saloons race will feature national champion Chris Cowling and runner-up Sam Waddell. A new face in this category is Mitch Vickery, who has recently had podium finishes in both the NZ Stock Car and NZ Super Stock Championships.
