Work on the new destination skatepark in Mount Maunganui is progressing well. As part of the project, improvements are being made to the pedestrian crossing at Hull Road to ensure a safer route over the railway line to the skatepark.
The first phase of these safety upgrades includes widening and realigning the shared path for pedestrians and cyclists between the skatepark and Newton Street. The crossing point over the Hull Road railway line will also be improved with a new flashing light for pedestrians, new fencing, and clear signage, according to a spokesperson from the Tauranga City Council.
The upgrade work began earlier this week and is expected to be completed by mid-April. Local businesses and residents may experience some noise and vibrations from the construction work, which will take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Traffic management measures will be in place, including a reduced speed limit in the area. However, the impact on commuters should be minimal as most of the work is being done on the berm. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained throughout the construction period.
The development of the new destination skatepark was initiated after community engagement on the city’s last Long-term Plan. The council committed to improving and expanding citywide skate facilities. The skatepark, which covers over 3000 square meters, was designed in collaboration with members of the Bay of Plenty’s skate community.
The new skatepark will cater to all ages and abilities, accommodating activities from skateboarding and inline skating to BMX and scooting. It is expected to contribute to the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of the community. The skatepark is located at a high-profile site on the corner of Maunganui and Hull Road, chosen for its proximity to amenities, shops, the beach, and Blake Park.
