10월 5일 세계 한인의 날을 기념하여, 세계 각국에서 생활하며 한국인의 위상을 높이기 위해 부지런히 일하는 한인들의 명단이 공개됐다.
그 목록에는 뉴질랜드 남섬의 도시인 크라이스트처치에 살고 있는 택시 운전사 정신기씨가 있다.
올해 세계 한인의 날에 노숙자들과 함께 일한 공로를 인정받아 국가상을 받았다.
택시 기사로 일하지만, 정신기는 “노숙인들을 위한 축복의 빵”의 대표이사이기도 하다. 지난 14년 동안 이 단체는 크라이스트처치의 노숙자 커뮤니티에 매주 주말 무료 급식을 제공해 왔다.
문제를 인식한 정신기는 노숙자들에게도 먹을 권리가 있다는 믿음을 받아들여 햄버거 10개를 들고 도심에 있는 Latimer 광장으로 향했다. 그가 무료 음식을 가지고 있다는 것을 알리는 표지판을 붙이자, 노숙자들이 그에게 접근하기 시작했다. 그가 이 일을 전념하는데 데 오랜 시간이 걸리지 않았지만, 지난 14년 동안 지켜온 다음 주말에 또 올 것을 약속했다.
공학에 대한 배경을 가진 정씨는 새로운 도전을 찾고 있었기 때문에 1993년 뉴질랜드의 남섬으로 이민을 갔다.
그는 택시 기사 월급으로 3남 1녀의 가족을 부양하기에 어려움이 많았다. 그러던 2007년 어느 추운 겨울날, 택시를 몰고 atimer 광장을 지나다 경찰이 폴리스라인을 치는 것을 목격했다. 호기심에 다가가 보니 추위와 배고픔을 이기지 못한 노숙자가 있었다. 죽었을 거라는 생각에 가슴이 아팠다고 말했다.
Christchurch의 기온은 매우 추워, 겨울에는 가끔 눈이 내리기도 한다.
정신기씨는 그때 다른 사람들에게 도움을 주도록 영감을 받았다. 뉴질랜드, 남아프리카, 필리핀에서 온 헌신적인 노동자들과 함께 이 일을 했다.
정성기는 끝까지 활동을 이어가겠다는 각오가 대단하다. 그는 노숙자들이 자립할 수 있는 기회를 얻기를 바란다. 그는 노숙자들을 지원하고 그들을 위한 새로운 시작을 만드는 것을 도울 재단을 설립할 계획을 가지고 있다.
뉴질랜드 정부는 또한 그의 노력과 이웃들에 대한 사랑의 실천을 인정했다. 올해 정신기는 뉴질랜드 정부로부터 대한민국으로부터 국가 훈장과 함께 메달을 받았다.
