남섬 성장을 위해 아시아 시장은 ‘중요한 기회’

2022년 Invercargill에서 남섬과 아시아 시장과의 사업 연계를 확대하기 위한 새로운 포럼이 계획되고 있다.
Great South Asia 개발 매니저인 Ella Zhang 은 남섬 사람들과 아시아 시장을 이을 수 있는 “중요한 기회”가 있다고 전했다.
최근 10월에 발표된 Te Waipounamu와 아시아 재단 보고서는 아시아 시장에 진출하기 위해서는 인적 네트어크가 필수적이라는 것을 발견했다.
Zhang은 내년에 있을 포럼에서 아시아 대사들과 투자자들을 초청해 이 지역의 잠재력을 넓힐 준비가 됐다고 밝혔다.
“사람들은 아시아와 무역을 하거나 사업을 하는 것이 무엇보다 매우 힘들다고 여긴다. 우리는 그 장벽을 깨고 싶다”면서 “이를 발판으로 삼아 우리 지역이 아시아와 거래할 준비가 됐음을 보여주고, 우리가 가진 우수성과 전문성을 보여주고 싶다”고 말했다.
남섬 소재의 기업들은 아시아 시장이 진출하기에 너무 어렵다거나 알리바바와 같은 대형 전자상거래 플랫폼에 접근하기엔 사업 규모가 충분하지 믿고 있지만 이는 사실이 아니라고 덧붙였다.
“이는 지역민들의 자연스러운 사고 방식이다. 우리는 단지 우리의 일을 할 뿐이며 이를 뽐내려는 의도는 아니다. 단지 우리 지역민들이 많은 기회를 놓치는 것 같아 안타깝다. 사람들이 우리에 대해 모른다면 우리에게 다가올 수도 없다”고 그녀는 말했다.
“Canny씨는 남섬에 와본 적이 없었지만 현재 그는 여러 회사들과 알리바바 플랫폼을 수출에 활용하는 데 도움이 될만한 방법에 대해 적극적으로 이야기를 나누고 있다. 이를 통해 남섬 사람들에게 이용 가능한 연결고리들을 만들어 줄거라 생각한다.”
이에 앞서 Great South Asia 전략 프로젝트 총괄 매니저 Stephen Canny은 남섬의 수출업체들이 고부가 가치의 아시아 시장을 공략함으로써 500만-1,000만명에 이르는 추가 소비자를 확보할 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.
뉴질랜드 기능성 식품 귀리 우유 공장은 현재 자본 조달 단계에 있으며 연어 기름 보충제와 애완동물 사료를 만들기 위해 육류와 해산물 부문에서 부산물을 사용할 수 있는 잠재력과 함께 뉴질랜드 시장의 현재 추세에 어필할 것이라고 전망했다.
현재 남섬 육류 생산자들은 일반적으로 고기 부속을 지역 외 회사들에게 판매해왔다.
“이는 우리가 거의 공짜로 부속을 팔고 있는 것과 마찬가지라고 생각했다. 이를 구매한 회사들은 이를 이용해 자신만의 레시피를 만들거나, 더 많은 이익을 얻기 위해 그 가치를 올리고 있다. 여기서 우리가 직접 못할 이유는 없다”고 했다.
남섬의 녹색 수소 발전소는 Zhang 매니저를 통해 한국의 통상위원들과 접촉하는 등 국제적인 관심을 끌기도 했다. Zhang 매니저는 “전통적인 관점에서만 상품을 봐서는 안된다”며 끝맺었다.
