The New Zealand government has made several changes to its immigration rules:
- Out-of-Hours Visits: After Mike Heron KC’s review, the government will now need a judicial warrant for out-of-hours immigration visits. This is to ensure powers are used correctly and aligns with the 2021 Dawn Raids apology to Pacific people.
- RSE Cap Increase: The Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme will allow up to 19,500 workers for the 2023/24 season, an increase of 500. This helps New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture sectors and supports Pacific Island neighbours.
- Construction and Infrastructure Roles: Seven new roles have been added to the Construction and Infrastructure Sector Agreement. Migrants can be hired for these roles at a wage of $26.69 per hour. The roles include Driller’s Assistant, Earthmoving Labourer, and five others.
- Green List Roles: Seventeen roles have been added to the Green List. Next year, the ICT, automotive, and engineering sectors can use Green List visas for these roles. They include Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, Fitter-Welder, and fifteen more.
- Recovery Visa Extension: People with Recovery Visas can get a three-month extension. The visa was created after the Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. The focus is now on a longer-term workforce plan.
Immigration Minister Andrew Little said these changes will support economic recovery, help businesses, and build communities.
