Most people in New Zealand agree with a ban on cellphones in classrooms, but they believe phones should be allowed during break times. The National-led government plans to completely ban mobiles in schools. Students will be required to leave their phones at the start of the day and pick them up at the end.
Horizon Research conducted a survey on four potential policy options. The survey included 1481 adults and found that 63% of households with children favored a ban during class time, but not during breaks. Only 22% of households with children believed there should be no ban at all.
Support for a ban, excluding class breaks, was highest in Northland, with 79% in favor. Horizon stated that despite the phone ban policy being seen as controversial during the election campaign, it actually has strong public support. They suggested that allowing mobile use during class breaks would increase support for the policy.
The survey was conducted from November 10-16. The respondents represent the adult population of New Zealand. The maximum margin of error is +/- 2.5% at a 95% confidence level.
