Maria Contreras Huerta, a woman who has made a name for herself in the male-dominated field of plumbing, has won a national scholarship. She dreams of owning her own business to provide opportunities for those who are often overlooked.
Contreras Huerta recently won the Plumbing World national scholarship for apprentices. The 22-year-old moved to New Zealand from Chile 16 years ago, without any knowledge of English. However, by the age of 14, she had set her heart on becoming a plumber.
She got her start in the trade through a school Gateway programme. When a plumber visited her home for a repair, she saw an opportunity and reached out to Dave Strong, the managing director of Morrinsville Plumbing and Gas Services. She showed up in her school uniform with her CV in hand, ready to prove her determination.
Contreras Huerta loves her job, as it offers new challenges every day. She takes pride in her work and appreciates when customers are satisfied with her services. She feels proud of her scholarship win, acknowledging the hard work and dedication she has put into her apprenticeship.
Her dream is to own a business that supports those who are struggling or lack support. She wants to be a source of encouragement for people who often face rejection, including disabled individuals.
Contreras Huerta has noticed an increase in women showing interest in plumbing. Despite facing occasional skepticism from customers or other workers, she remains focused on her work. She believes in doing her job well, regardless of others’ opinions.
