In the last three weeks, four farmers died in quad bike roll-overs, during the start of lambing and calving season. WorkSafe is investigating these accidents due to the rising number of deaths.
The first accident happened in Wairarapa on July 18, followed by incidents in Canterbury and Southland, with the last one in Northland on July 30. WorkSafe noted that farm vehicle accidents are among the top two causes of workplace deaths in New Zealand.
Graham Bates, a principal inspector at WorkSafe, stated that farming involves many tasks, which can lead to distractions. However, these challenges should not lead to deaths or injuries. He highlighted that this time of year brings changing weather and ground conditions that can make farming more dangerous.
Steep and sloped surfaces have been a significant factor in some recent roll-over cases. Bates emphasized that those working on the farm have the most influence over safety.
WorkSafe recommends several safety measures for farmers, such as installing a roll-over protection device, ensuring drivers are qualified, wearing helmets, and making sure the brakes are fully engaged before exiting the vehicle.
