Waiheke Island’s only after-hours medical clinic, Oranga Urgent After Hours, has closed suddenly, leaving many residents without local medical care during evenings and weekends. The clinic, run by the Piritahi Hau Ora Trust, announced its closure last Friday. People no longer have access to a doctor after 5 pm on weekdays or on weekends.
The Piritahi Hau Ora Trust did not explain the closure and referred inquiries to the Auckland PHO. Te Whatu Ora confirmed that its contract with the service was still valid for the year but did not comment on the closure decision. Locals have expressed shock and confusion over the situation, stating they deserve more information about why the clinic shut down.
Residents are now advised to seek help through telehealth services, Healthline, or call emergency services (111) for serious issues. The Ostend Medical Centre mentioned that St John Ambulance would still operate, but they asked people to help ensure the ambulance service is not overwhelmed.
Jessica Culpan, a long-time resident, shared community fears about the lack of available medical services. She highlighted her concerns for elderly residents who might consider leaving the island due to the closure.
Rob Kay, a former GP on the island, voiced worries about patient safety, stating that without a local after-hours clinic, some urgent cases may go unexamined. He explained that previous arrangements allowed patients to contact a number and consult with a doctor, but now only ambulance staff will provide assessments.
Kay warned that this could lead to more patients needing to be transferred to mainland hospitals, which may not always be feasible depending on weather conditions. He emphasized that certain medical conditions require in-person evaluations and that delays could have serious consequences.
He also noted that families with young children are particularly at risk, as children frequently experience accidents and health issues that typically need urgent care outside regular hours. Local officials are urgently exploring long-term solutions for after-hours medical services on Waiheke Island. St John Ambulance has also been contacted for more information.
