Yichuan
South Waikato’s Sister City, Yichuan, is a prefecture-level city in the northwest of Jiangxi Province, China, bordering Hunan province to the west. The area spans 18,700 square kilometers and has a population of 6,100,000. Yichuan is located along a river surrounded by mountains and has a humid subtropical climate. The city has a profound Buddhist culture, and the monastic rules for Buddhists at the Buddhist temple originated from Yichuan. Additionally, Yichuan is the birthplace of many literary figures, such as Tao Yuanming and Deng Gu, both of whom are famous poets in China’s history.
As one of the 28 main grain producing areas in China, Yichuan’s grain, oil, pig, meat output, and bamboo stock rank first in the province. It is a mountainous city with green hills, clear water, and pleasant weather that refreshes the mind. Yichuan is a holy place of Zen Buddhism and home to many outstanding people in ancient times. Three of the five schools of Zen Buddhism originated in Yichuan.
The highlight of Yichuan is the Mingyue (Moon) Mountain, which gained its name from its shape like a bright crescent moon. The scenic area consists of over ten peaks, all more than a thousand meters above sea level. It is also a national forest park comprising six tourist zones. Among them, the Yangshan Scenic Spot is an important birthplace of Buddhism in South China, and the Wentang Town, at the foot of the Mingyue Mountain, is famous for hot springs teeming with selenium.
Yichuan has many other scenic spots, such as the Sanzhaolun National Forest Park, Zhuojiang Karst Cave, Wucheng Ruins, and Wugong Mountain. The city’s transport is served by Yichun Mingyueshan Airport, which is about 6 kilometers from downtown Yichuan and 33 kilometers from the Mingyue Mountain. The airport offers domestic flights to and from major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing.
