The Catholic Church in Christchurch is considering locations for a new cathedral to replace the one that was destroyed in the earthquakes. The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, which was 115 years old and located on Barbadoes Street, was demolished in 2020 after being severely damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The Catholic Diocese of Christchurch is currently looking into three possible locations for the new cathedral. Bishop Michael Gielen stated that they prefer to rebuild the cathedral at the original Barbadoes Street site. He said that this location is considered the best place for their cathedral, as it returns to their humble roots. The diocese will be asking for public input on the proposed locations in the coming months.
