У большинства больных плесенью появляется сыпь или поражения в виде пятен, бугорков, волдырей или язв. Обычно они появляются на лице, руках, ногах, рту, горле, гениталиях и анусе. Поражения протекают поэтапно: сначала они плоские, приподнятые, заполняются жидкостью, покрываются коркой и со временем отслаиваются. Они могут быть болезненными и зудящими, на заживление которых уходят недели. Кроме того, у некоторых людей изначально могут появиться симптомы гриппа.

Существует два типа мокса: клада I и клада II. И то, и другое вызвало недавние вспышки болезни в африканских странах, причем число случаев заболевания кладой I возросло.
