Businesses in Hamilton are to send organic waste to a Taupō-based worm farm in a move that will save tonnes of waste from entering landfill.
The organic waste management programme is launching in the city next week using MyNoke’s earthworms – the world’s largest worm farming operation – to create natural fertiliser.
Hospitality businesses, accommodation providers and event organisers will be provided with 140-litre bins for the collection of food scraps and compostable material.
The waste will be taken to the Taupo worm farm, where it will be converted into rich compost.
MyNoke general manager Phil Holland said the company has a goal of diverting 1 million tonnes of waste from landfill every year.
It has, to date, diverted over 1.2 million tonnes of waste from landfill.
“We’re excited about the project starting in Hamilton, to be followed by Taupō, Tauranga, Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, and Dunedin,” Holland said.
He said every worm composting site is environmentally friendly, with no chemicals used.
