Законопроект о договорных принципах все ближе к парламенту. Кабинет министров обсудил его в понедельник и планирует представить его в ноябре. Этот законопроект направлен на изменение принципов «Тирити Вайтанги», сосредоточив внимание на правах собственности, а не правах коренных народов. Его возглавляет помощник министра юстиции Дэвид Сеймур.
Премьер-министр Кристофер Луксон отметил, что, хотя Национальная партия и не поддержит принятие законопроекта в качестве закона, она согласится на публичное расследование его содержания. Во время прошлых событий по всей стране Луксон подвергся критике за этот законопроект. Он попытался решить эту проблему, заявив, что National поддерживает законопроект только в первом чтении.
В понедельник, после обсуждения в кабинете министров, Луксон подтвердил, что референдум по принципам Договора проводиться не будет. Он сказал: «Мы поддерживаем законопроект в первом чтении. Законопроект поступит в Палату представителей в ноябре», что подтверждает ограниченную поддержку со стороны National.
Возрастает противодействие законопроекту. Более 400 христианских лидеров подписали письмо с просьбой к правительству отменить его. Они предупредили, что законопроект может навредить Аотеароа (Новая Зеландия), и подчеркнули, что церкви обязаны соблюдать традиции Те-Тирити или Вайтанги. Они призвали депутатов запретить передачу законопроекта в Специальный комитет.
Представитель Лейбористской партии Вилли Джексон также раскритиковал законопроект, заявив, что его не следует принимать в парламент, и призвал министров Национальной партии выступить против него. Однако Луксон заявил, что не намерен останавливать принятие законопроекта и выступает за его рассмотрение парламентским комитетом.
Луксон объяснил, что законопроект о принципах договора был важным вопросом в ходе коалиционных переговоров, для решения которого потребовалось время. Сеймур предложил подождать, пока законопроект не поступит в парламент, поскольку он подтвердит, что «все люди имеют равные права».
