Elaine và Greg Exler, những người có ngôi nhà ở Tây Auckland bị ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng bởi trận lụt kỷ niệm Auckland năm ngoái, đã thực hiện những thay đổi đáng kể đối với tài sản của họ để ngăn chặn thiệt hại trong tương lai. Họ đã hạ đường lái xe xuống, sửa máng xối trên mái nhà, dọn cống thoát nước và thêm một rãnh và lưới vào hàng rào để chuyển nước ra khỏi nhà của họ.
Hội đồng đã đến thăm 1.300 tài sản khác bị ảnh hưởng bởi lũ lụt năm ngoái và đang thúc giục họ thực hiện các bước tương tự để bảo vệ ngôi nhà của họ. Tom Mansell, người đứng đầu Hội đồng Auckland về kết quả bền vững, gợi ý rằng chủ nhà có thể thực hiện những thay đổi nhỏ, chẳng hạn như thêm các khoảng trống trong hàng rào, để ngăn nước làm hỏng tài sản của họ.
Tuy nhiên, không phải tất cả các chủ nhà đều tuân thủ. Adrian Wilson, giám đốc Tuân thủ, cảnh báo rằng chủ nhà không thực hiện thay đổi có thể phải đối mặt với hậu quả như hóa đơn hoặc thông báo yêu cầu họ phải hành động.
Gia đình Exlers đã chi hơn 150.000 đô la cho việc cải tạo nhà của họ và lập luận rằng hội đồng nên cung cấp một số tài trợ.
