Kami는 2013년 오클랜드 대학생 3명이 디지털 방식으로 노트 필기를 간소화하는 방법을 모색하면서 설립됐다.
이 앱은 현재 180개국 이상에서 사용되었으며 3천만 명 이상의 선생님과 학생들이 사용하고 있다.
공동 설립자이자 최고경영자인 Hengjie Wang은 $10,000의 보너스는 코로나가 전세계적으로 유행하는 동안 온라인 강의실을 계속 운영하도록 도와준 직원들에게 감사를 표하기 위함이라고 말했다.
“우리는 지난 18개월 동안 전세계 교사들과 학생들을 지원하기 위해 엄청나게 오래 일했고 많은 희생을 해왔다. 감사의 말을 전함과 동시해 직원들의 성취를 치하하기 위한 방법을 원했다”고 Wang은 말했다.
Kami는 전세계적인 대유행의 최악의 기간 동안 학생들에게 디지털 방식으로 계속 다가갈 수 있도록 교사들에게 소프트웨어를 무료로 제공했다.
클라우드 기반 앱을 통해 교사와 학생들을 인쇄용지 페이지에서 해방시켰고, 인쇄 비용 수백만 달러와 교사들의 시간을 절약했다고 말했다.
이 앱은 교사와 학생들이 크롬북의 디지털 복사본과 pdf에 접근할 수 있도록 했다. 학생들은 교사가 볼 수 있는 화면 상의 폼을 이용해 공부했다.
이 앱은 현재 미국 전역의 90% 이상의 학교에서 사용되고 있다.
Wang은 Kami의 성공이 다른 현지 기술 스타트업들에게 막대한 자본 없이 달성할 수 있는 본보기가 되기를 바랐다.
“스타트업 펀딩에 대한 발표 자료들이 많지만 카미는 이들과 달랐다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 이 정도의 성장과 우리가 가진 영향의 달성이 가능하다는 것을 세상에 보여 주었다. 현금 위주의 스타트업도 가능하다. 우리는 작은 규모에 보수적인 뉴질랜드에서도 이를 실현할 수 있다는 것을 보여줬다. 자본은 성장과 성공의 장벽이 아니다” 라고 Wang은 말했다.

그러나 카미의 성장을 촉진할 인재을 찾는 것은 어려운 일이었다.
대표는 “같은 생각을 가진 사람들을 신중하게 고용하고, 스타트업의 유연성과 함께 사업을 계속 운영하는 것이 중요했다”고 말했다.
그는 교육 분야에서 변화를 만들기위한 공통의 비전을 가진 사람들을 채용했며, 대다수 직원이 전직 교육자 출신이며 그들 중 일부는 Kami의 이전 사용자라고 밝혔다.
“이러한 열정은 자연스럽게 나타나야 하며 우리는 항상 재능과 열정이 넘치면서도 세상에 영향을 미치기를 원하는 사람들을 찾고 있다”면서 “항상 매우 인간적을 다가가려 노력했는데, 이것이 성공의 비법이라고 생각한다”고 전했다.
