중국계 뉴질랜드인들은 올해 자신들을 겨냥한 사기전화가 크게 증가했다는 경고를 받고 있다.
뉴질랜드에 사는 아시아인 페이스북 페이지에 사람들이 중국 대사관으로부터 서류나 소포를 찾는 것과 관련해 ‘이상한 전화’를 받았다는 글들이 올라오고 있다.
“일주일에 거의 2~3번 정도 이렇게 자동으로 걸려오는 전화를 받는데 정말 짜증난다. 제가 차단했는데도 계속 다른 번호로 전화한다. 도대체 끝이 없다”라고 전했다.
“낮에 전화를 받았는데 처음에는 제가 중국 여권 소지자도 아닌데 좀 이상했다”며 또 다른 사람이 말했다.
“전화를 건 이 남자를 좀 캐보고 싶어서 미끼도 던져봤지만, 자기 상사에게 무슨 일인지 물어보겠다고 하면서 나중에 다시 연락하겠다고만 했다. 그리고는 다시 자세한 내용을 위해 8번을 누르라는 자동 메세지로 연결되었고, 다른 남자가 받았는데 중국어로 말을 걸었다. 근데 너무 서툴러서 대본을 미리 숙지하지 못한 것처럼 들렸다. 이런 사기꾼들을 조심하라고 당부하고 싶다.”
한 여성은 뉴스허브(Newshub)와의 인터뷰에서 룸메이트가 중국어로 말하는 사람으로부터 전화를 여러 통 받았지만 “그 사람들은 중국어를 전혀 못한다”고 말했다.
넷세이프(Netsafe)는 뉴스허브에 2019년 이후 많은 사기 신고가 들어왔지만 올해는 특히 지난해에 비해 31.8% 증가했다고 밝혔다.
대변인은 “사기꾼들이 중국 대사관 전화번호를 조작해 중국 국적의 이름을 가진 사람들에게 전화를 건다”고 말했다.
“사람들은 그들이 자신들을 중국 공안과 연결시키려 한다는 신고가 들어오고 있다. 이는 전 세계인을 대상으로 한 사기극이다.”
넷세이프는 이번 사기 사건과 관련해 뉴질랜드 사람들에게 다음과 같은 조치를 취할 것을 촉구하고 있다:

  • 통화하는 사람의 신원을 확실히 알아둔다. 발신자에게 누구를 대신해 전화를 걸었는지 물어보고, 전화번호부에 공개된 번호들 중에 있는지 찾아본다. 정보나 돈을 공유하기 전에 직접 거기에 전화를 걸어 다시 한 번 내용을 확인한다. 이는 발신자 ID가 올바른 번호를 표시되는 경우에도 해당된다.
  • 이미 돈을 보낸 후라면, 은행 또는 송금하기 위해 이용했던 기관에 찾아가 이 사실을 알린다.
  • 민감한 개인 정보를 공유한 경우 iDCare와 같은 ID 보호 서비스에 문의하여 무료 도움 및 지원을 받는다.
  • 여권 정보가 분실된 경우 뉴질랜드 이민국에 문의한다.
  • 발신 번호, 발신 시간과 날짜를 포함하여 통신사에 신고한다.
