United Airlines dijadwalkan menjadi maskapai Amerika pertama yang mendarat di Christchurch, Selandia Baru. Penerbangan pertama dari San Francisco dijadwalkan tiba pada pukul 10.35 pagi pada hari Minggu. Maskapai ini menyebut ini sebagai “momen kunci dalam sejarah penerbangan untuk Christchurch”, karena ini adalah pertama kalinya sebuah maskapai penerbangan AS terbang ke Pulau Selatan Selandia Baru.

Pesawat yang digunakan untuk penerbangan perdana ini bernama ‘Kiwi Cruiser’ dan menampilkan simbol pakis perak untuk memperingati acara tersebut. Rute langsung akan dilayani tiga kali seminggu menggunakan Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Justin Watson, CEO Bandara Christchurch, sangat senang menyambut United Airlines di bandara South Island untuk musim panas. Dia yakin layanan ini akan secara signifikan meningkatkan pariwisata di wilayah tersebut. Watson juga mencatat bahwa pasar perjalanan Amerika aktif kembali, dengan orang Amerika ingin menjelajahi apa yang ditawarkan Pulau Selatan.

Selain itu, layanan ini akan meningkatkan kapasitas angkutan udara untuk produsen Pulau Selatan. Patrick Quayle, wakil presiden senior United untuk perencanaan jaringan global dan aliansi, mengungkapkan kegembiraan pribadinya untuk rute baru, setelah melakukan backpacker di Selandia Baru di awal hidupnya.

Mike Williams, kepala transformasi dan aliansi Air New Zealand, mengatakan layanan non-stop baru dari Christchurch ke San Francisco memperkuat kemitraan yang ada antara kedua maskapai. Dia menambahkan bahwa itu menyediakan lebih banyak opsi koneksi antara Selandia Baru dan AS untuk pelanggan.
