앤디 스콧 항공 제독은 연중 이맘때 남극으로 가는 비행은 기온이 섭씨 영하 33도에 이르는 극심한 추위 때문에 위험하다고 말했습니다.일광이 없기 때문에 승무원들은 피닉스 비행장으로 비행하기 위해 야간 투시경을 착용해야 했습니다.이 기술은 RNZAF가 2021년 7월에 유사한 의료 후송을 위해 처음 사용했습니다.

도중에 우회할 비행장이 없었기 때문에 남극 대륙에서 항공기에 연료를 보급해야 했습니다.극한의 추위로부터 엔진을 보호하기 위해 급유 중에도 엔진을 계속 가동했는데, 이를 “고온 연료 공급”이라고 합니다.계속하거나 방향을 바꾸기로 결정하는 것을 ‘부메랑’ 포인트라고 합니다.

크라이스트처치로 돌아오는 여정은 7시간이 넘게 걸렸다.톰 우달 (Tom Uall) 뉴질랜드 주재 미국 대사는 어두운 곳, 혹독한 기상 조건, 한겨울에 비행하는 것이 얼마나 어려웠는지 인정하면서 RNZAF의 “세계적 수준의 의료 후송”을 높이 평가했다.그는 남극 대륙에서 양국이 오랫동안 협력해 온 것에 대해 깊은 감사를 표했습니다.
