Dewan Regional Waikato telah menyetujui rencana transportasi senilai $11,8 miliar untuk 3-6 tahun ke depan. Rencana Transportasi Darat Regional Waikato 2024—2054 menetapkan kebutuhan transportasi wilayah untuk 10-30 tahun ke depan dan akan digunakan untuk meminta dana dari pemerintah pusat.
Tujuan utama rencana tersebut termasuk menerapkan Kasus Bisnis Rencana Tata Ruang Metro, meningkatkan ketahanan regional, mengurangi emisi transportasi, dan membentuk kembali daerah perkotaan untuk mendorong transportasi aktif dan menyediakan lebih banyak pilihan.
Upaya untuk meningkatkan ketahanan akan fokus pada Semenanjung Coromandel dan Titik Te Poporo/Bulli di tenggara Danau Taupo. Rencana tersebut juga mencakup peningkatan pemeliharaan di jalan lokal dan jalan raya negara bagian di seluruh wilayah.
Rencana tersebut membahas masalah keselamatan jalan, dengan fokus pada kecepatan dan infrastruktur, masalah yang dihadapi oleh pengguna berisiko tinggi dan rentan, dan inisiatif untuk penegakan hukum, pendidikan, dan perubahan perilaku.
Dua proyek jalan yang signifikan, Hamilton Southern Links dan perpanjangan Cambridge ke Piarere dari Waikato Expressway, juga termasuk dalam rencana.
Komite Transportasi Regional Waikato, yang dengan suara bulat menyetujui rencana tersebut pada pertemuan 21 Juni, telah mengembangkannya selama 18 bulan terakhir. Selama waktu ini, pemerintah berubah dan pernyataan kebijakan baru tentang transportasi darat dikeluarkan.
Panitia menerima 89 pengajuan dari otoritas lokal, pemangku kepentingan, kelompok advokasi, dan individu. Umpan balik membantu membentuk rencana tersebut, menurut Anggota Dewan Regional Waikato dan Ketua Komite Transportasi Daerah Mich’eal Downard.
Rencana tersebut sekarang akan dikirim ke Badan Transportasi NZ Waka Kotahi untuk ditinjau.
