뉴질랜드에서는 2020년에야 자궁내막증에 대한 임상 지침이 수립되었습니다.이 질환에 대한 의료 서비스 이용은 제한적이고 지연되고 있으며, 이 질환에 대한 이해도 부족한 실정입니다.뉴질랜드의 여성 10명 중 1명과 출생 시 여성으로 배정된 여성은 어떤 형태로든 자궁내막증을 앓고 있을 가능성이 있는 것으로 추정되지만, 실제 수치는 더 많을 수 있습니다.

자궁내막증의 증상으로는 생리 통증, 만성 골반통, 성교 통증, 비정상적인 출혈, 장 및 방광 문제, 피로, 불임 등이 있습니다.이 질환에 대한 알려진 원인이나 치료법은 없습니다.치료는 일반적으로 증상 완화에 중점을 두지만 성공률은 다양합니다.

연구에 따르면 자기 연민을 실천한 자궁내막증 환자는 자신의 증상이 덜 심각하다고 인식하여 삶의 질이 향상되는 것으로 나타났습니다.자기 연민에는 어려운 시기에 친절하고, 비판적이지 않고, 자신을 이해하며, 자신의 경험이 혼자가 아니라는 것을 인정하는 것이 포함됩니다.

Skinner는 자궁내막증이 있는 사람들에게 자신의 증상을 잘 파악하고 의학적 조언을 구할 때는 스스로 변호해 주라고 조언합니다.그녀는 또한 이 질환을 안고 살아가는 것이 힘들 수 있지만 도움을 받을 수 있다는 점을 지적하면서, 그들에게 친절을 베풀도록 격려합니다.
